Doyle Jesse Gunter, 92, was born June 11, 1921 in Wetumka, Oklahoma to Rachel and Roy Gunter. He passed away at home surrounded by those he loved most on September 2, 2013. Doyle was the 4th of 8 children and spent his early years moving with his family picking cotton and doing farm work in Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri and Kansas. He left school after the 3rd grade to help his father with the farm. Doyle taught himself to play the guitar, banjo, violin and mandolin. He met the love of his life, Pearl Gordon, who he married on July 17, 1942 in West Plains, Missouri. On November 5, 1942 Doyle was drafted into the US Army, leaving his wife and newborn son, Curt, to serve in the 11th Army Division, 22nd Tank Battalion, assigned and attached to General Patton's 3rd Army. Doyle was shipped to England for the last push of WWII. He drove tanks from Liverpool across the English Channel to France and Bastion, Belgium to Luxembourg, across the Rhine River through Germany, and from Austria to Czechoslovakia. Doyle told many stories of his time in the Army handling guns and transporting ammunition to the front line armed units and how he saved a man from death. He received an honorable discharge in December 1945 and was awarded 3 Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal and numerous bars and ribbons. In May 1946, Doyle, Pearl and their young son, Curt, moved to Sunnyside, WA where he worked in a cannery. He worked as a laborer at Hoover Dam, Grand Coulee Dam and various construction jobs around Tri-Cities and Hanford, joining Local 348 of the Laborers Union. In 1950, Doyle moved his family to the Richland Wye. In 1951, he traded a two room camp trailer for a flat roofed one room building in West Richland that he built into the modest home that he lived in till his death. He was a strong and dedicated union member receiving a certificate for 50 years in the Laborers' International Union of America. Doyle was a hardworking man who believed in discipline, good morals and values that he embedded into his children. He could build, fix or grow anything. Doyle was a devoted husband to his wife, Pearl, for 71 years and deeply valued his faith as a Jehovah Witness. Doyle loved telling stories, especially his time in the military and joked with everyone he met. With a big smile and twinkling blue eyes he would always say, "Glad you got to see me again!" Doyle is survived by his wife, Pearl , and his 10 children: Curt (Janice); Wathena Halladay (Richard); Angie Coburn; Roy (Susan); Gale (Pudge); Dale (Terry); Ervin (Chris); Doyle "Bud" (Lindie); Annie LaFleur (Mike); Jannie (son, Russell and daughter, Sasha Ramirez); 31 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. Doyle was preceded in death by his Father and Mother; his 7 siblings; son-in law Denny Coburn; daughter-in-law Kathy Clossey Gunter; and grandson-in-law Jeff Johansen. Graveside services will be held Friday, September 6, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 10th and Union Street, Kennewick.
