Doyle "Dee" Sly passed away on November 14, 2024 at the age of 82 in Fort worth, Texas. Born on December 1,1941 in Milford, UT. He lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his community.

Dee attended Milford High School where he was involved in the Model UN programs and edited the high school yearbook in his senior year. He graduated from Milford High in 1960 and was in a class of about 32 graduates. He attended Stevens-Henager Business School in Salt Lake City and worked evenings at Wycoff Shipping Company & JCPenny in Salt Lake City. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Austrian mission. Upon returning from his mission, Dee attended Brigham Young University earning a degree in Banking and Finance. Dee met his wife, Ellen Waddell, when they were both students at Brigham Young University. They were married in the St. George LDS Temple. Dee left 3 months later to serve in the Vietnam War. His assignment was fire direction control. After his military service, he returned home and moved with his wife to Oregon where he worked for the National Bank Administration as a National Bank Examiner, a job that required a lot of travel. He wanted to be home more, so Dee began working for Foremost Insurance Company in Walnut Creek, California. In college, he worked his way through school at Pratt's Shoe store on Center Street in Provo. He left his job at Foremost Insurance to follow his entrepreneurial spirit, it was ironic he fell back into the shoe business and purchased Gary's Shoetique in Sacramento, CA. Many years later he returned to his love for numbers and purchased an Accounting & Tax Practice in Sacramento, California where he worked until he retired.

A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dee was active in his faith community and served in many capacities. His love for travel took Dee and Ellen around the world during retirement. He loved going back to Austria, he fell in love with the country and people on his mission, and he remained fluent in German for the rest of his life. Music played a significant role in Dee's life, particularly during his time in Richland, Washington, where he served on the Community Concert Board.

Family was central to Dee's life. He grew up in a small farming community in Milford, UT surrounded by many extended family members. During much of his life, he was the "seeing eye" for his grandma Limb, who was blind. As he got older he was her traveling companion and often read encyclopedias to her. Because of that, he could answer most Jeopardy questions that came on TV. His kids would often tell him he should be on that show! He loved oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, marzipan, chocolate cordials, watching the stock market, wearing shoes in the house, driving along the California coast, collecting stamps, taking walks, reading on the patio, playing with our dog Meg, and playing games, especially chess. Most of his grandkids learned to play, and loved challenging him to a chess game. He loved people and could visit for hours, he never met a stranger. Dee loved California and could have stayed there forever, but being a grandpa who loved his grandkids even more than California, he found himself moving to Washington and then Texas to live closer to many of them. He didn't get a chance to move to Maryland by his East coast grandkids, but he visited often and always had a fun new historical site to introduce his Maryland grandkids to.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen; daughter Laurrel (Joe) of Maryland; daughter Michelle of Utah; son Kurtis (Dana) of Texas; and 9 grandchildren: Ryan, Ty, Derrek, Kenzie, Amelia, Trent, Brock, Hailey & Beckett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Doyle and Alta Sly, and his younger brothers Oren, Ned and Bobby Sly.

Dee loved education and served on PTAs and school boards even as an empty nester. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to help a student at https://donate.churchofjesuschrist.org/contribute.

A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 11am at the Desert Lawn Memorial Park (1401 South Union St., Kennewick, WA). Please arrive by 10:30am.
