Dorothy Fletcher Carnes Turley passed away on September 28th, 2016, surrounded by family, at the age of 83, at Guardian Angel Homes in Richland, WA. She was born to Noah and Lena (Henderson) Fletcher as the middle child of five on July 19, 1933, in Durham, OK. She grew up on a farm near Sayre, OK where she learned hard work, chopping and picking cotton until her fingers bled. She graduated from New Liberty High School in 1951. Dorothy had a scholarship to go to a business college in Sayre after graduation, but her dad lost his arm in a cotton gin accident so she chose to stay home to help with the farm. Dorothy married Frank Carnes in December of 1954, a young WWII veteran from Sayre. A year later their first son, John Rodney, was born. Frank had drawn a farm unit in the Columbia Basin near Basin City, WA and in 1956 the young family loaded up their belongings and moved to Washington. They first lived in Pasco, while Frank built a small house on their farm unit. In September of 1957 daughter Linda was born. Frank and Dorothy acquired a Hanford era barracks in time to welcome daughter Ellen in May of 1960. Son Ed was born in November of 1962. Shortly after Ed was born, the family purchased another farm unit a mile east of their home. The unit had a more modern house to accommodate the growing family. In the late 60's the family purchased a farm unit along Glade Road north of Pasco. It was there the Carnes kids learned how to work hard, clearing sagebrush off the land in order to farm. Dorothy passed down her strong work ethic and sense of responsibility, teaching her growing children how to change handlines - driving back and forth from Basin City twice a day. A highlight of this adventure was stopping at Merrill's Corner for a Dr. Pepper and peanuts! The Basin City community was a tight knit bunch and Dorothy had several dear friends; Colleen, Iris, Jeannette, and Beulah. She was a great cook and liked to pick and can fruit, hating to see anything go to waste. In the early 70's Dorothy worked as an aide at Basin City Elementary school and then as a bookkeeper at Full Circle farm supply. In April of 1975 Frank passed away. During this difficult time, her faith, friends, and "one day at a time" attitude saw her through. Dorothy had a still growing family to care for and continued working until 1981 when she married her deceased sister's husband, Merle Turley. This union created what Merle called the "Turley/Carnes Bunch". Dorothy and Merle lived in his home in Boulder City, NV. They enjoyed frequent motor home trips to Michigan, Arizona, Oklahoma and Washington to see grandkids and other relatives. In 2012 Dorothy and Merle settled back on the family farm near Basin City. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Everett, C. L. & Garland, sister Louise, and her husbands Frank and Merle. Dorothy is survived by her children Rod and Robie Carnes, Linda Carnes, Ellen Carnes Wilson (Jay), Ed and Jodie Carnes, Jana Turley Williams (Gary), Jill Turley Miller (Ted), and Jeff Turley (Traci), grandchildren Kyle (Alyssa), Jessica Hummel (Jared), Ethan, and Clint Miller, Spenser (Heather) Turley, Beau (Teagan), Curtis (Nancy), and Eric (Dana) Carnes, Haylee and Maichen Carnes, Jesse and Sarah Wilson, and many great grandchildren. The burial service will be on Thursday, October 6th, at 9:30AM at City View Cemetery in Pasco, WA. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held on the same day at 11AM at Richland Baptist Church with lunch for all following the church service.
