Dorothy B. Lyle

March 22, 1928 – January 7, 2026

After living a good, long life, Dorothy (Brill) Lyle passed away, at her home in Richland, WA, on January 7, 2026, at the age of 97. Dorothy was born March 22, 1928, in Gore, VA, to parents Ida (Sirbaugh) and James Brill. She joined older sister, Anna Lee. The family pulled up roots in the early 1930's and moved west to Clayton, WA. She attended Deer Park, WA schools and excelled in music, singing in the choir and playing the violin.

After graduating in 1946, she went to Cunningham, WA, with some school friends who had family there. Dorothy worked as a farm crew cook. At a party that her employer's had for family friends, Dorothy met her future husband, Elwyn Lyle. They married a year later in Hatton, WA, on November 23, 1947.

They lived in Hatton for a few years until they built a house on the Lyle Family farm. There, they raised their four children, Craig, Ed, Ross, and Sharon. Besides taking care of the kids, Dorothy kept herself busy sewing, playing the piano (self-taught), painting and cooking – lots of cooking.

Every summer during wheat harvest, which usually lasted 6-8 weeks, she would cook 3 meals a day for 20+ people, 6 days a week. She didn't cook for the crew on Sundays. However, she didn't rest on the 7th day. She was busy washing clothes and bedding for the crew that stayed at the bunk house.

Elwyn and Dorothy farmed until 1994 and then moved to the Canyon Lakes area in Kennewick, WA. During this time, they finally took time to do some traveling that eluded them during their farming years. After Elwyn passed away in 2007, Dorothy stayed in their home until 2018 when she moved to a retirement apartment in Richland.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Elwyn, son, Ross Lyle, parents, James and Ida, and sister, Anna Lee Suiter. She is survived by sons, Craig (Karen) Lyle and Ed Lyle, daughter, Sharon (Mike) Damon and daughter-in-law, Tonia Lyle; grandchildren, Andy (Katie Schaefer) Lyle, Brandon (Stephanie) Lyle, Greg (Virjinia) Lyle, Brad Lyle, Kelsey (Josh Bailey) Damon, and Darren (Kelsey) Damon; great-grandchildren, Sidney, Carson and Austin Lyle, Wesley Lyle, and James Damon; cousins, Chuck (Claudia) Stewart and Susan Rumble; and nieces, Marilyn Watson and Joy Suiter.

A service will be held Friday, January 30, 2026, at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union St., Kennewick, WA. There will be a viewing from 9:00-10:30, and funeral service at 11:00 am. A burial service will follow immediately after at Desert Lawn Memorial Park (right next to Mueller's). It will be followed by a luncheon for friends and family at Kennewick First United Methodist Church, 2 S. Dayton Street Kennewick, WA.
