Don Short passed away at home April 27, 2008. He was born to William Dorsey "Doc" Short and Mabel Moody Short in Purcell, Missouri April 3, 1924. After joining the Army in 1943, Don served in the European Theater of Operations with the VII Corp Artillery. He fought in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland and Central Europe. Upon discharge from the army in October 1945, Don moved to Prosser, Washington where he met Norma Higdon. They married December 20, 1948. After marriage, Don and Norma made their home on their farm in Kennewick and raised four sons. Don worked for Newberry-Neon and Empire Electric before transferring to J.A. Jones Construction as Chief Engineer and Assistant Project Manager at the Hanford Reservation. Later he held positions as General Superintendent and Chief Construction Engineer building aluminum smelters and nuclear power facilities nationally and internationally. He finished his career in construction as Assistant to the Vice-President of the Power Division of J.A. Jones Construction in Charlotte, North Carolina. Don returned to Kennewick to develop Desert Pines Mobile Home Park with Norma and their sons. Don enjoyed building and maintaining a pleasant place to live for all the residents of Desert Pines Mobile Home Park. He took pride in operating the finest manufactured housing community in the region. Don was preceded in death by his parents William Dorsey "Doc" Short and Mabel Moody Short, his wife Norma, and his brother and sister William "Dwane" Short and Dorris "Lionne" Smith. Don is survived by his four sons; Don "Monty" Short II and wife Donna, Steven Short with Joyce Lickar, Gary Short and wife Linda and Jeffrey Short and fiancée Patricia Canchola. Don is also survived by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many children who loved "Grandpa Don". Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday May 2, 2008 at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union Street in Kennewick. Private burial afterwards. The family requests a donation to Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice in lieu of flowers.
