Obituary

1932-2018 David Lee Whitehead was born in Missoula, Montana, April 16, 1932, and was 86 when he went to meet his Lord on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, after a long battle with cancer. He went peacefully surrounded by family at his home in Kennewick, Washington. David worked hard all his life and worked many various jobs. He started at 11 working in the asparagus fields. In 1950, he joined the Navy Air and did his service in the Pacific Theater during the Korean War. He returned with an honorable discharge and began working at Hanford. He then joined the first Richland Police Department where he patrolled for eleven years. During this time, he met his wife, Donna Faye Mills, and in 1957 they married. They recently celebrated 61 years of matrimony. He was an entrepreneur. He became self-employed and began selling and buying land and cattle. His various skills included well drilling, which he still held his drilling license, journeyman plumber and electrician card. In 1970, David went to Alaska and worked for the White Pass and Yukon Railroad. In 1977, he bought the Historic, Golden North Hotel in Skagway, Alaska, and operated this with his family for 20 years. In 1997, his family returned to the Tri-Cities and continued to cultivate his love of animals. David always had a love of all living things, but especially cattle. David was well known in the cattle industry and had vast knowledge in Gene Star and animal husbandry. His experience with cattle garnered him an International Grand Champion award in Houston, Texas with the Low Line breed. David kept a daily diary for over 30 years. He loved to play cards and board games with his wife and family. David enjoyed his dogs, garden and driving around the countryside. David was a devout Catholic, he loved the Blessed Mother and he said his rosary daily. His beliefs led to many religious trips with his family around the world. David was preceded in death by his parents, Hutchison Alfred Whitehead and Josephine Anne Ashenbrenner Whitehead, sisters, Shirley Ann Stalkfleet, Helen Marie Bonnie, Mary Kathern Swarts, son, Mark Anthony Whitehead and Luke Andrew Whitehead. He is survived by his wife, Donna Faye Whitehead, a brother and sister, sons, Steven Lee Whitehead (Laura), Matthew Jay Whitehead (Diana) and daughter, Theresa Lynn Thomas (Jeff), numerous Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. The viewing will be between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm and Rosary will be said for David on Thursday, June 21st at 6:30 pm. The funeral will be held on Friday, June 22nd at 10:30 am. All will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 520 S. Garfield Street, Kennewick, Washington.
