Darrel Butterfield, 77 passed away on Thursday February 1, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends at home. Darrel was born January 20, 1930 in Pasco, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orval and Lula Butterfield, brothers; Harold and Lester Butterfield. Darrel is survived by his wife Kathy Butterfield of 33 years, step-daughter; Vallerie Dickinson, step-son; Vick Irish Judy, sisters; Jettie Tate Wadus and Dorothy Derting of Florida, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Darrel graduated in 1948 from River View High School in Hover, WA. He joined the United States Air Force in 1948 servicing his Country for 3 years. Darrel worked for the City of Pasco in the Public Works Department for 28 years from September 1951 to October 1979. He was the Filter Plant Foreman for the Water Treatment Plant from 1966 to 1979. Darrel?s Father, Orval Butterfield worked a total of 26 years for the City of Pasco. In November 1981, the City of Pasco made a resolution officially changing the name of the City Water Filtration Plant to the City of Pasco Butterfield Water Filtration Plant, in honor of the contributions made for commitment and length of service to the City of Pasco by Orval and Darrel Butterfield. Darrel had a passion for horses and was around them most his life. He belonged to the America Quarter Horse Association and the Jockey Club. He learned the basics of starting a horse from his Father who was a pretty good hand with a horse. Darrel pursued his dream of training and running both quarter horses and thoroughbreds from 1959 to 1990 in which he won many horse races. Darrel never pursued rodeo seriously but enjoyed the sport and loved to bulldog and calf rope in his younger days. From 1991 to July of 2006 Darrel team roped and enjoyed his many friends and heckling them. He had an awesome sense of humor, always filled with laughter and tales of yesteryears. No one walked away from Darrel without being touched by his contagious smile and sense of humor, even to the very end. Darrel will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a very special Husband, Brother, Father, Grandfather and Friend. To have known and shared life with Darrel is to know God?s goodness, peace and joy. His memory will remain forever with us.
