Darlene Opal Carlton (White), age 87, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025, in Kennewick, Washington surrounded by family.

Born on January 11, 1938, in Saint Helens, Oregon, Darlene was the daughter of Frank and Nina White. She later made her home in Kennewick, Washington, where she earned her GED and built a life rooted in family, friendship, and community.

Darlene dedicated many years to the Kennewick School District as a bus driver and dispatcher. Her time there was marked not only by her commitment to safely transporting generations of students but also by the deep friendships she formed with colleagues— bonds that lasted throughout her life.

She was a woman of many talents and passions. She was an excellent seamstress, quilter and skilled crocheter, Darlene lovingly created blankets for all of her children and grandchildren. She also compiled photo albums for each grandchild, preserving cherished memories with care and devotion. In springtime, she found joy tending to her flowers, nurturing beauty around her home.

Darlene's sense of community extended beyond work and family. She was an active member of the Kennewick Eagles and proudly served in the Jaycee-Ettes, where she was honored as the outstanding local president in the state—a testament to her leadership and dedication. Alongside her husband Don, she enjoyed bowling with friends, sharing laughter and camaraderie at the lanes.

Faith played an important role in Darlene's life. She attended the Living Room Church in Kennewick and especially appreciated their music ministry.

After retirement, Darlene embraced travel. One of her favorite vacations was spent in Sydney, Australia with friends. She particularly loved spending winters in Arizona—a tradition that brought her warmth, adventure, and lasting memories. Her beloved dogs Brigit, Abby Sue, Molly and Sady were constant companions.

Darlene is lovingly remembered by her children: Rick Carlton (Marie), Becky Allman (Ted), and Lisa Carlton, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Nina White; siblings Delbert White (Nancy) and James White; husbands Richard E. Ellsworth; Donald V. Carlton; Earl Gavaert; daughter Karen Roe (Robert).

Her legacy lives on through those who knew her—as a devoted mother, a loyal friend, a creative spirit, and a woman who lived fully with all her heart.

The Rose
