Charles Richard "Dick" Sonderman, 77, passed away peacefully, January 20, 2015 at Trios Hospital, Kennewick, WA, following an extended illness. Dick, son of W.F. "Bud" Sonderman and Veronica Selch Sonderman, was born in Sunnyside, Washington January 29, 1937. They moved to Spokane where his brother, Carl, was born and his foster sister, Georgia Jones, joined the family. In 1948 the family returned to Bud's hometown of Kennewick, Washington. Dick had fond memories of neighborhood friends. In school he enjoyed playing football and basketball. Had he not joined the Marine Corps in 1954, he would have graduated with KHS Class of '55. After his honorable discharge in 1957, he went to work for his father at Twin City Produce. In the summer of 1957 he met Jacque Nielsen. They were married December 28, 1957 in Coeur d 'Alene, Idaho. Dick was overjoyed with the birth of his daughters, Cami in 1959 and Darci in 1962. He was incredibly proud of the women they became. After his father's death in 1964, Dick took over the family produce business and moved his young family to the 1910 Sonderman homestead west of Kennewick. In 1966 Dick was injured in a motorcycle accident which eventually resulted in the amputation of his left leg. No longer able to manage his business, he found work as a car salesman. He sold cars at a number of dealerships over the years, moving into general management positions. He retired in 1999. Dick lived for the outdoors! Hunting, fishing, boating, gold mining, and photography were his favorite things to do, including a year as a fishing guide. Accompanying him on his adventures over the years were his beloved dogs—Rocky, Pepper, Gunner, Dingo, Buck, and lastly, G.G. aka Hunter. His lifelong dream was to live in a log cabin. In 1999 Dick and Jacque moved to a log cabin he designed and had built in the Blue Mountains north of Dayton, WA. Here, they enjoyed hosting family and friends—especially, the annual 4th of July picnics. Due to Dick's health problems, they returned to Kennewick in 2012. Dick loved building memories with his grandchildren: time at "Grandpa's Mountain" gold mining, fly fishing, target shooting, riding the four-wheeler and trips to the beach. Each grandson fondly remembers special one-on-one Wednesdays with Grandpa. Dick was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Karen Sonderman; sister and brother-in-law Georgia and Cal Buckenburger, brother-in-law Sid Foreman and granddaughter Sarah Hanson. He is survived by wife, Jacque of Kennewick, WA; daughters Cami Hanson of Spokane, WA; Darci (Dave) Mitcham of Kennewick, WA; grandchildren Tyler Hanson of Hidden Meadows, CA; Jared Hanson of Kennewick, WA; Jacob Hanson of Spokane, WA; Grant Hanson of Spokane, WA; Brandon Mitcham of Scottsdale, AZ; Krystal (Kyle) Corbaley and great grandchildren Michael and Lily of Waianae, HI. He is also survived by in-laws: Bob (Eve) Nielsen of Federal Way, WA; Jane Foreman of Richland, WA; Mary (Steve) Joy of Wenatchee, WA; Tom (Pat Campbell) Nielsen of Port Gamble, WA; Jonna (Rich) Crow of Mercer Island, WA; Melanie (Tris) McCall of Bend, OR-- and many, many loved nieces, nephews and cousins. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, January 29, 2015 at First United Methodist Church, 2 S. Dayton St. Kennewick, WA. Memorials may be made to East Benton County Historical Society, Franklin County Historical Society, Kennewick First United Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice.
