September, 1946 to June, 2014 Our Dad was born September 21, 1946, in Okmulgee, OK. He moved to Kennewick, WA, with his parents, Frank and Juanita, and his sister, Anne, when he was five yrs old. He grew up here and graduated from Kennewick High School in 1964. After high school Chuck and some of his buddies went to Weed, CA, for college. They worked in the forest and fought fires, chopped wood and lived like hippies. He enlisted in the Army in March, 1967, and did a tour in Vietnam. He attained the rank of Sergeant with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. When he returned home in 1969, he married Maggie Hooper Swanberg and adopted her little girl Lisa, who grew up here as Lisa Murphy. He always told Lisa it was her Mom and her that saved his life after the war. In the early '70s, he joined Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 598, Pasco, WA, as an apprentice and became a journeyman pipe fitter. He also played softball as a hobby and sport for the Playboy tavern. One of his fondest memories was when his team made Nationals and played in Shea Stadium. What home town heroes they became! In 1983, Chuck married Laura Vinning and they had their daughter, Sadie, in September of that year. They divorced and Chuck and his parents raised Sadie together. They became avid Mariners fans. If they didn't watch the game on TV they went to see them play live. Dad also developed a love for scuba diving, bicycling and snow skiing. He loved his family and friends and spending time with them, going on vacations and exploring new places. He was a wonderful father, teacher and friend to many, he will be missed by those who knew him. Last year when he found out he had cancer, he and Lisa tried to fight the disease every way they could. His battle ended on June 8, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Juanita Murphy, sister, Anne Evans and aunts and uncles. Survivors include his daughters, Lisa Murphy and Sadie Gajdos and her husband Scott, grandson, Ben, and one great grandson, Sean, one nephew, Doug Evans, nieces, Darcie and Debbie, and some cousins. Graveside services will be held at 3pm on Friday, June 20, 2014 at Mueller's Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 1401 S. Union St, Kennewick, WA 99338, (509)783-9532. No farewell words were spoken, No time to say goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why. A celebration of our Dad's life will be announced at a later date.
