Carol Jean
Peterson
Dec 13, 1938 — Mar 17, 2024
Carol Jean Peterson passed away at home, on Sunday, March 17 2024, with loving family by her side.
Carol was born on December 13, 1938, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Jessie Anne Sutton and Vernon Wilson.
Carol was raised primarily in the South, although she spent time attending high school at a military base
in Japan. She graduated high school from the Academy of Richmond County in Augusta, Georgia in 1956.
Carol married George William "Bill" Freshour June 29, 1956. The marriage ended in divorce. She married
Larry Peterson August 17, 1991, in Kennewick, who survives her.
Carol is survived by her husband, Larry, and her daughter Rebecca Haverfield. Her daughter Kim Hiles
preceded her in death. Carol is also survived by her three stepdaughters, Patti McCoy, Shelly Martello,
and Terri Wild. In addition, she is survived by her sister Kitty Van de Kamp and her brother Glynis Ward.
Carol is also survived by her pride and joys – her grandchildren, Forrest Cenci, Nicole Cenci, Leah (Cenci)
Fuller, and Colton Hiles, and her 11 great-grandchildren.
Her family remembers Carol as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who adored her
family and especially loved playing games and spending time with the youngest of members. Carol was
also a master gardener, who loved her outdoor flowers and houseplants. She especially enjoyed growing
roses, hydrangeas, and peonies. Carol was also an excellent cook who loved preparing big family holiday
dinners. She is best remembered for her cornbread stuffing, clam chowder, spaghetti, and apple pie.
Carol loved music, especially 50s and 60s rock and roll. Carol always enjoyed listening to the Solid Gold
Oldies and sang and tapped along with the music. A radiant smile and mischievous sense of humor were
her trademarks.
Carol moved to Kennewick in 1975 where she put down roots and lived for the remainder of her life.
Carol obtained her real estate license and worked for Elly Rowland Realty, in Richland. Later she was
employed at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, where Carol verified and ensured safe radiation levels for
operation crews as a Health Physics Technician. Carol greatly enjoyed her time at Hanford and the many
friendships she formed while working there. While working at Hanford, Carol met and fell in love with
Larry, who would become her husband. The couple spent nearly 33 years of marriage together, enjoying
snowmobiling, RVing, and spending time at home and with family and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on May 4, 2024, at 2:00PM at The Living Room Church in Kennewick.
