Bryce Carlson was a fair man of great character, loved by many and respected by all who knew him. He sadly passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2014, at the Hospice House in Kennewick, WA. He was a long time resident of Pasco, WA. Bryce was born on January 26, 1919 in Pleasant Grove, Utah to Grace (Downs) and Duane Carlson. Bryce's family moved to Pasco, WA in 1937 into what is now known as the Moore Mansion. The owners at that time, hired Bryce to repair the worn out entrance steps, that were then made out of wood and to replace them with poured concrete ones; which are still in place to this day. He had a reputation for being a handy man (self-taught), a true jack of all trades, and at one time was, even a Miner. When Bryce was attending church as a young man, there he met his true love, Miss Beulah Booth, a young 16 year old girl. They were both smitten, and married less than a year later, on August 25, 1940. In the earlier 1940's Bryce went to work for the Northern Pacific Railways, which would later be known as Burlington Northern. There he continued his employment, up until his retirement. During the 1940's, he also set out to build his family home. Being a handy man he built the entire home, all by himself, from the ground up. Due to war-time rations, he had to pour the concrete basement/foundation, one slab at a time, along with installing the plumbing and electrical as well. Together he and his wife raised their three children, in a little home full of love and happiness. Bryce had a funny sense of humor, a quick wit and the most unique way of naming his cars. He owned a '49 Ford named Ernie, a Pontiac named Chief, and a Model T named Lena. He had a wide repertoire of hobbies: gardening, drawing, bowling (up till 90 years old) and had a sharp mind for Sudoku, crossword puzzles and cryptographs. He was a soft spoken man, with a gentle soul, who could teach without using words. Bryce was always there to help out when needed. His best known quote was "I've always been my brothers' keeper". He had a great capacity to love and his unyielding devotion to his family and friends was known to make good things happen. He lived his life with honesty and integrity, and was a shining example. Bryce left a lasting footprint on everyone that knew him. Bryce is preceded in death by his parents Grace and Duane Carlson, his two brothers Keith and Kenley, and his beloved wife Beulah. He is survived by his sister (whom he named), Maxine (Marv) Kimber, his three children: sons Byron (Pauline) Carlson, Jerry (Peggy) Carlson, daughter Sandy (Frank) Votaw, 13 grandchildren: Carrie (Doug) Lundgren, Tima (Dave) Goiri, Sean (Heather) Carlson, Vikki Carlson, Duane Carlson, Kent (Tammy) Votaw, Frank (Gina) Votaw, Michael (Kuniko) Votaw, Glenn (Carlene) Votaw, Don (Lynne) Craig, Rich Craig, Bryan (Jennifer), Angela (Ivan) Schaeffer, Richard and Maria Carlson, along with 34 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Viewing will be held Monday, August 4th, 2014, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union Street, Kennewick. A graveside service will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5th, at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 10th and Union Street, Kennewick. There will be a Celebration of Bryce's Life on Sunday, August 10th, 2014, at 1:00 p.m., at Riverview United Methodist Church, 4012 W. Court St., Pasco. All friends and family are welcomed to attend.
