Obituary

Betty Jean Themar, age 84, loving wife, mother and grandmother, peacefully passed away at home on December 17, 2013. Betty was born to Vera and Harold Harter on August 29, 1929, in Kahlotus, Washington. She married Bill Themar on February 7, 1953. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year with a family gathering in June. Betty learned early the importance and joy of family. She loved to share the story of her trip down Kahlotus Hill in the little red wagon with her Aunt Maggie. She also took her new husband dancing at the Star School House on the Kahlotus Highway with three generations of Harters attending. Her devotion to her family took many forms. She was a Girl Scout leader to her daughters' troop, teaching them the value of charitable works. She was actively involved in many bowling leagues, bowling with her father, her husband, her brother, and daughters over the years. She supported her family in all of their sports activities, but especially softball which was a real family event with her husband and son as coaches and her four daughters on the team. Betty and her father Harold were their biggest fans. She loved having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren around her. They were her joy. Betty was also active in her church and took great pleasure in her service to God. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Lloyd, Donavon and Helen Marie Harter, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her husband Bill, five children, Helen Samuels, Janice Mize, Terri (Cliff) Burt, Tami Graves, and Bill (Hyang) Themar, Jr., 19 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Her funeral will be held Saturday, December 21, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., at the Union LDS Church, 515 S. Union, Kennewick, with viewing beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Relief Society Room. A graveside service will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice at The Chaplaincy, 1480 Fowler Street, Richland, WA 99352.
