Betty Corey Owen passed away in Kennewick with her family by her side on July 10, 2012. Betty was born to Clayton Doc and Jessie Corey on January 7, 1922, in her grandparent's home in Murray, Nebraska. She grew up in South Dakota primarily on a small farm on the Belle Fourche River and later in Spearfish. In 1942 she was accepted to John's Hopkins University to train as a registered nurse for the Armed Forces. Upon graduation in 1945, she remained at John's Hopkins as a head nurse. Betty followed her family to Richland, WA in 1946. Although the Tri-Cities was dry and dusty, she loved it because she could see for miles. She was quickly accepted into Kadlec Hospital's OB department. In 1948 she met and married her soul mate, Frank Owen. Betty and Frank adopted a son Phil in 1952 and a daughter Meg in 1955 after which Betty became a full-time mother and homemaker. Later, Betty worked part time for Dr. Harville and was with him until he retired. She also worked briefly at Kadlec and then at HEHF Hanford Environmental Health Foundation until she retired. Betty lost Frank 1996 and in 1997 she moved to a retirement area in Kennewick. She soon met a second love, Barry Jacobson, with whom she spent the rest of her life. Betty loved to garden, cook, travel, read, and especially to care for her family. She had beautiful rose gardens. All summer roses brightened the corners of her family's home. Betty was an expert cook. The family rarely went out to eat because her cooking was preferred over any restaurant. She made the house a home, everything organized and in its place with wonderful meals on the table each day. Betty traveled extensively, especially enjoying the National Parks and Western scenery and the wines of Washington State. Until the end, Betty was still the consummate homemaker, cooking, cleaning, and driving. Betty loved her independence and was fortunate to be able to leave this earth on her terms - quickly and painlessly in the company of her children and Barry. Betty is survived by her son, Phil Owen Martha of Kennewick; her daughter, Meg Mercer Chris of Richland; Grandchildren, Leslie Owen, Kiah Owen, Kirsten Dean Les, and Eric Mercer; great-grandchildren, Ana and Shelby Dean; sister, Patricia Eastly, Vashon, WA; nephew and niece, Clay Eastly and Susan Eastly Yeasting; great-nieces and nephews: cousin Bob Corey, South Dakota; Love and companion Barry Jacobson. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Frank Owen. A memorial and celebration of life will be held at The Manor at Canyon Lakes Wednesday July 25 at 6:00 PM. Donations may be sent in her honor to Tri-City Union Gospel Mission or the charity of your choice.
