Bernadette Rosella "Sally" Rutherford, 87, passed away peacefully at home. Sally was the daughter of Joseph and Anne Miller. She was born in St. Anthony, North Dakota in 1927 and was raised on a diversified farm South of Mandan. She was the youngest of eleven children, seven girls and four boys. During WWII, Sally moved to Portland and became Rosie the Welder welding Liberty Ships for the war effort and making "big bucks" of $1.20 per hour. There she met her future husband, Victor "Red" Rutherford. They were married in 1946 and then bought their first trailer. When it was paid off they traded it for a bigger (31 ft.) trailer. Red worked as a pipefitter following construction so with the trailer, no matter where they traveled for work, they were always home. They settled in the Tri-Cities in 1948, living at first in the big trailer park in North Richland. Sally and Red both worked at the Hanford Project but also began selling trailers on the side. This soon became a full time occupation as they formed a dealership named Red's Trailer Mart at the Richland Y. They eventually grew the business to be one of the largest dealerships in Eastern Washington. Sally enjoyed spending time with her children. She was a Den Mother and Girl Scout leader. She loved to travel, first with the kids in camp trailers and motorhomes, sometimes on narrow two rut crumbling mountain roads that really shouldn't have had camp trailers and motorhomes on them. She and Red also traveled, visiting such places as Africa and China. She was an avid snow skier for years. Sally was a longtime volunteer at Kennewick General Hospital (Trios) and enjoyed managing the gift shop there. Sally was also president of the auxiliary. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kennewick. Beginning in 1959, Sally designed and supervised the construction of three homes, each of which soon became a gathering place for family and friends. Except of course for the living room which was, following her own mother's tradition, off limits to children and most adults except at Christmas when it would become the home of the "decorator" Christmas tree. Each year Sally had a new tree theme and older decorations were banished to the basement Christmas tree where children were allowed to help decorate to their own style. Sally was preceded in death by her husband Red and daughter Bonnie. She is survived by her son Rick (Lois) Rutherford, Randy (Nancy) Rutherford, Sue (David) Peachey and a gaggle of grandkids and great grandkids. A Rosary will be at 5:30 p.m., Friday, January 30th at St Joseph's Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 31, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in the Chapel.
