Arlene Faye (Fertig) Schaffer, 81 of Kennewick, WA, went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 7, 2015. She was born October 27, 1933 to Carl & Eva (Rahmig) Fertig in Mitchell, Nebraska and was raised in nearby Gering. At age 14, Arlene and her family relocated to Washington State, living first in Walla Walla, then Prosser and finally Kennewick. She attended Kennewick High School and worked at the Roxy and Benton theaters and the Highland Drive-In. The family returned to Nebraska during her junior year and she completed her education, graduating from Gering High School in 1951. Arlene moved back to the Tri-Cities and worked on and off for General Telephone for 24 years, retiring in 1991. She will be remembered for her caring heart, sparkling blue eyes, incredible sense of humor and, of course, her famous chili. She loved family and friends, cooking, sewing, home improvement projects, dancing, slot machines, the color purple and coffee mochas. Arlene was preceded in death by both parents. She is survived by her three children Cheryl (Dennis) Anderson, Camano Island, WA; Tami Hilyard, Chandler, AZ; and Mark Schaffer, Finley. She is also survived by her sister Dorothy (Walt) Feil, Kennewick; brothers Marlin (Cheryl) Fertig, Sequim, WA and Jim (Jackie Thompson) Fertig, Kennewick; 3 grandsons Bryant, Nick and Paul Schaffer and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, wonderful friends and the apple of her eye, her great-grandson, Carsyn. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, August 22nd, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2505 W. 27th Ave in Kennewick, where she was a faithful member for many years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
