Andrew Perry Mileham 1945-2025

Andrew Perry Mileham (Andy) passed away from natural causes on July 1, 2025 in Richland, Washington. Andy was born on July 16, 1945 in Englewood, New Jersey to his father James Willis Mileham and mother Delia Elmendorf Tamney Mileham.

His father James was an educator with the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco) and his work took the family abroad to Saudi Arabia during Andy's childhood. His father later accepted a faculty position at Mississippi State College for Women. While his family was living in Saudi Arabia, Andy attended Frederick Gunn School in Washington, Connecticut.

On graduating from high school in 1963, Andy enlisted in the US Navy and served as a radar technician on destroyers and on Swift Boats at Cam Ranh Bay in Viet Nam. On being honorably discharged from the Navy, Andy enrolled in the DeVry University in Phoenix where he graduated with a degree in instrument technology. He was then hired by the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. After a few years at Fermi, he attended Colorado State University where he studied graduate level Health Physics. He was subsequently hired at Battelle Northwest in Richland, Washington where he worked in the Radiological Instrument Calibrations group.

In 1980, he moved to the Radiation Protection Section as a Development Engineer. In about 1988, he completed a Master of Science degree in Radiological Science from the University of Washington, and shortly after achieved certification by the American Board of Health Physics. He was also a Registered Radiation Protection Technologist.

He retired from Battelle in 2001, and traveled frequently to France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Costa Rica and Brazil. In 2009, he walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

Andy was devoted to his pets, which included several parrots of various species.

Andy was preceded in death by his father, James, and mother, Delia. His is survived by his brother Jim, niece Edith, and nephew John.
