WENDELL W. BATEMAN Mueller's Chapel of the Falls Wendell W. Bateman, 87, peacefully left this earth on September 26, 2008, surrounded by family members, at Hospice at The Chaplaincy. Wendell was born in Parsons, Kansas, on April 4, 1921, to Wallace and Eliza Bateman, while the family was relocating from Missouri to Kennewick. Wendell grew up on the river bank in Columbia Park. He graduated from Kennewick High School in 1942. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 16, 1942 as a B-25 aircraft mechanic and was discharged from the service on August 26, 1943. While in the service he married his high school sweetheart, Pearl Dague. Pearl took the train to Texas, where Wendell was stationed at Sheppard Field; they were married on June 19, 1943 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Upon discharge, they came back to Kennewick where Wendell resumed work on the family farm for his dad and uncle. Wendell and Pearl made their home on Bateman Island, surviving the floods of 1948 and 1949; moving off the island in May of 1952 to the Highlands where he maintained a home until his death. During the 70's they made several trips to Taiwan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Indonesia, and Central and South America. He especially enjoyed the Philippines and Taiwan. He is preceded in death by his parents Wallace and Eliza, sister Vernita, and daughter Lila. He is survived by his wife, Pearl; his brother, Conrad of Kennewick; his daughter, Linda Ken Moszeter of Eugene, OR; his sons, Larry Sue Bateman of Kennewick; Lynn Pattie Bateman of Kennewick. Ten grandchildren: Meg Gentry, Tanya Chad Winkler, Lee Stephanie Bateman, Heath Jennifer Bateman, Shane Gentry, Brent Moszeter, Casey Bateman, Betsy Patrick Markus, Kyle Mandy Bateman, Carrie Bateman and several great grandchildren. A celebration service will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Kennewick, Ave and Dayton Street, on Friday, October 3rd at 11:00 am. Internment will be at Riverview Heights Cemetery. Following the internment, a reception will be held at the First United Methodist Church. Viewing will be Thursday, October 2nd from 6-8 pm at Mueller's Chapel of the Falls.
