Wally Chitwood passed away unexpectedly March 3rd, 2014. Wally was born in Bakersfield, California and later moved to Venice Beach, CA where he spent most of his childhood and early adolescence. He graduated from Venice High School and enlisted in the United States Army where he served our country and was honorably discharged. He married Dorothy Mae Pounds in 1946 and they spent 68 wonderful years together. From that union came two daughters Judith Ann Chitwood and Cynthia Lea Chitwood, and one granddaughter Jessica Ann Kerr. Wally held numerous jobs until he was hired by the Bakersfield Fire Department. After a long career he retired as a Captain. While working at the fire department he also worked for Sears Roebuck as an auto service and parts manager. He retired from Sears in 1991 and moved north to Kennewick, Washington where he continued working as a real estate agent, and later as a bookkeeper for Fresh Start Cleaners. In 2001 he ended his entire professional career and became a full-time grandpa (papa). When Wally wasn't busy working, he enjoyed numerous recreational and leisurely activities. He enjoyed surfing in his younger years, and spent most of his free time on the beach. He later began to travel with his wife Dorothy. Together they traveled across the southern United States and once to Hawaii. During the Hawaii trip Wally went surfing again at the age of 60. They also enjoyed competitive dancing and won several dance titles and awards. Wally's true gift was story telling. He had a wealth of knowledge and life experience that he loved to share with anyone who would listen. He had a way of teaching those who listened without them ever knowing they were being taught. Wally believed that you were not placed on earth to see through people, but to see people through. He lived by this simple philosophy every day, and was known to many as a reliable, generous and kind man. Wally was an only child and was preceded in death by his father Russell Wallace Chitwood and mother Wilma Adeline Chitwood. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Mae Chitwood, daughters Judi Fisher (Gerald Fisher), Cynthia Chitwood (Brad Kerr), grandchildren Jessica Evarts (Michael Evarts II), Kimberly Dreger (Daniel Dreger), Shane Fisher (Coralee Fisher); great-grandchildren Adelynn and Annilea Evarts, Erika Martin (Jake Martin), Tyler Myers, Cameron Carlin (Ashley Carlin), Mason and Madelynn Fisher; great-great-grandchildren Aubree and Brody Martin, Raygen, Remme and Roary Carlin, Liam Myers. Dad/Papa, we will miss you. Thank you for always being there for us.
