W.D. "Darrell" Boone ended a long battle with Alzheimer's and was reunited with his beloved wife, Barbara, on August 27, 2017. He was 91 years old. Darrell was born in Madison, Kansas. At age 12, he moved with his family to Eugene, Oregon. He graduated from Eugene High School and became the first in his family to earn a college degree, as he worked selling furniture and installing flooring to finance his Bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon. He went on to earn his Master's degree from the University of Oregon as well. In 1954, while living in Bend, OR he met the love of his life, Barbara Joy Will, and they married just ahead of his induction into the Army. As his family grew, Darrell's education continued, and he finished all required coursework from Stanford University and Oregon State University towards a doctoral degree. Darrell moved to the Tri-Cities in 1966, joining the faculty at Columbia Basin College as a Language Arts professor, where he taught literature, English composition, and technical report writing for over 25 years. He belonged to numerous organizations such as the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, and the Kennewick Kiwanis Club, where he served as secretary for many years. He valued his life membership in the Chi Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional fraternity for educators. He was a proud member of Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalists. He was active in local Democratic politics, acting as precinct committee chairman and delegate to county and state conventions. He served on the vestry at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour. Darrell was a life member of the Freemasons Bend Lodge #153. When he moved to the Tri-Cities, he enjoyed belonging to the Scottish Rite and various other Masonic-affliated groups. One of his proudest moments was his installation as Worshipful Master of the Richland lodge. He was Associate Guardian of Richland Bethel # 47 of Job's Daughters several years. He remained active in many Masonic organizations years after his retirement, until his health made continuing impossible. Darrell is survived by his children Susan Boone (Chad Parker), Darrell Daniel Boone, Richard Boone (Nora), Nancy Boone Schmauder (Tracy) and David Boone (Jeannetta); his grandchildren Megan Parker-Boone, Amanda Smith, Tony Boone, Devin Boone, and Trystin, Joshua, Kammran and Riley Boone. In addition, he had six great grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings Dwight Boone and Joan Wray, both of Bend, Oregon and brother from another mother, Dan Deane of Pasco. He was predeceased by his wife of fifty-seven years, Barbara, parents Jack and Zona Boone, daughter Phyllis Boone, grandson Shawn Boone and great granddaughter Evalyn Boone. A memorial service for Darrell is scheduled on Friday, September 8, 2017 at St Paul's Episcopal Church, 1609 W 10th Ave, Kennewick, WA at 11 am with a reception to follow in the Fireside Room at the Church. Darrell's family requests you dress in bright, vibrant colours for the occasion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, St Paul's Episcopal Church, or any charity of your choice.
