Virginia VanZant died Saturday, March 28, 2009. She was born September 10, 1924 at Steptoe, near Colfax, WA, the daughter of Edward and Lavina Mullen. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred, and her sister Edna Mae Eskelson. She married Fred E. VanZant May 17, 1957 in Clarkston, WA. Virginia currently was serving on the Burbank District Water Board, and has been for a number of years. After she graduated from Steptoe High School in 1941, she went to work for Clearwater Power Company in Lewiston, Idaho where she was employed for 22 years. In the mid 1960's she and Fred moved to Pasco. While Fred drove truck for Consolidated Freightways, Virginia opened a tropical fish shop in Pasco, which she operated for about 6 years. After moving to Burbank she worked at Sears for approximately 10 years. Virginia is survived by 5 step children, Delores Bayman of Albany, OR, Darlene Driggan of Walla Walla, WA, , Doris McDougall of Tucson, AZ, Bob VanZant of Potlatch, ID, and Jim VanZant of Tolleson, AZ. She had a close bond with her grandchildren Debbie Robinson of Walla Walla, WA, and three granddaughters from Oregon, Donna Carlson, Marla McCrary and Laura Hawkins. Her nephew Gary Eskelson from Houston, TX, and niece Aislinn Scofield of San Francisco, CA. In addition she is survived by her dearest friend Peg Wallace and her family, and her neighbors, Brent and Kim Cook, all of whom included Virginia in their family life and whose support made it possible for her to remain in her home until her death. Her home is adorned with pictures of the children of these families whom she dearly loved. Virginia loved crocheting and doing crafts, her flowers and sharing her rather large garden. Virginia was blessed with a sincere love of people and an uncanny ability to make caring and lasting friendships. Folks from her church, her pinochle club, her exercise class, her neighborhood and as far back as her childhood sent notes, made phone calls and came to the hospital to visit in her last days.
