Victor Charles Kippes was born in Marion, S.D. on May 15, 1918 to Michael and Rosalia Kippes. On January 5, 2011 he passed away in the West Highlands Kennewick home that he and other family members had built in 1951. As a young teen, the family moved to Kennewick. To earn money he hunted and trapped small game and later joined the 3C?s. After graduating from Kennewick High School he joined the Army Air Corp and served in the Philippines and New Guinea, manufacturing oxygen for fliers in WWII. He returned to Illinois in 1946 after the war to marry his sweetheart Dorothy Ida Hertenstein, who he had met while training at Fort Scott. Following their nuptials they moved to Kennewick. He began a long career with various contractors on the Hanford site as a pipefitter, affiliated with Local #598. They were blessed with 5 children, Jack, Jane, Rick, Michael, and Tim, and many grand children and great grand children. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph?s Parish and then later The Parish of the Holy Spirit. In the ?60?s and ?70?s he was the scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #168 and was very proud to have his four sons achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed watching all high school sports. Hunting, fishing, and family campouts were some of his favorite activities and he loved being around horses and dogs. An accordion player, along with his sister Esther and their friends, the Kellers, formed the band The 4K?s and played for dances in grange halls and clubs around the Columbia basin in the 50?s. At family gatherings it was always fun to watch him play Beer Barrel Polka. He was preceded in passing by his loving wife, Dottie. Vic is survived by his two sisters, Adelia Smith and Esther McClendon. A memorial mass will be held at Parish of the Holy Spirit on Tuesday, January 11th at 10:30AM, followed by a graveside ceremony at Desert Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, because of Vic?s great love and devotion to the Boy Scouts, memorial donations may be made to the Blue Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts.
