Shirley Ann (Stanley) Gross was born August 23, 1929 to Walter B. Stanley and Anna S. (Arneus) Stanley. She joined brothers Jack (Bud) and John, her grandmother Hanna and Aunt Ellen in the family home. As a child growing up in Denver she took numerous dance classes, acrobatics and learned to play both the violin and piano. Shirley was a child model, swimming instructor and sports editor for her school paper. She also performed in school plays and operettas and won numerous talent competitions. As a child, her dream was to become an airline hostess. Her second choice was to teach either music or gym. In 1944, she joined The Rainbow Girls and the Theta Rho clubs and later joined the Rebekah Lodge where she remained active through 2016, attending meetings and playing piano. In 1946, Shirley moved to Richland with her family when her father went to work in the machine shop at Hanford. High school in Richland was full of dancing, acting in plays and playing many sports including baseball and basketball, in which her team won state championship and she was named most valuable player. Shirley met her husband Robert Gross at a roller-skating rink in Pasco where they performed in many shows together. They were married May 2nd, 1949 and moved into a house on Rainier street where they resided for 53 years. They enjoyed boating, pinochle parties, bowling, visiting with friends, and spending time at the Elks lodge dining and playing bingo. In 1950, Shirley started working for the city of Kennewick holding numerous positions including head accountant until she retired after 35 ½ years. In 2001, Bob and Shirley decided that they had had enough of home maintenance and moved into a condo where they could just relax and enjoy life. After Bob passed in 2002 Shirley decided to go back to dancing and joined the Tri-City Tappers, performing on TV and at several senior and adult living centers. In 2006, when health issues became too much to handle on her own Shirley moved into The Manor at Canyon Lakes. She made many new friends among staff and residents and worked in the library, helped manage several of the activities and loved doing water aerobics most mornings. In June of 2012, Shirley moved to the Eugene area to live with her daughter Luann and son-in-law. She enjoyed spending time on the farm watching the cows, pigs and chickens, and spoiling the household cat and dogs. Shirley had a lifelong passion for travel which included several trips to Florida, Mexico, Denver, and visits to wherever her children were living. She also enjoyed multiple cruises including one on her 75th birthday when she took her kids and their spouses on a cruise to Alaska. For her 80th Birthday Shirley accompanied her children and spouses on a trip to Branson, MO and for her 85th travelled to Portland with her children, most of her grandchildren and many of her great grandchildren. Shirley is survived by her children and their spouses Bob & Joy Gross, Myra & Dennis Bailey and Luann & Dennis Kloehn. She had 8 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to PeaceHealth Hospice of Sacred Heart in Eugene, Oregon or a local hospice of your choosing. Funeral services will be held Today, May 9, 2017, 10:00 a.m., at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union Street, Kennewick, with viewing beginning at 9:00 a.m.
