Robert W. Denslow Jr. ("Bob") passed away on March 27th, 2017, due to complications of Alzheimer's and cancer. He was 77. Robert was born May 11th, 1939, in Yakima to Robert and Kathleen Denslow. His father was a state patrolman and his mother a teacher. During his youth, Robert and his family lived in Wapato, Ritzville, Olympia and Yakima. Robert was a talented basketball player. He eventually became a star center and captain for Yakima High. He went to college at the University of Washington in 1957, where he played basketball as a freshman and joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Athletics were not to be his future, however, and so he decided to study pharmacy. This proved a fortuitous choice, as he met another pharmacy student, Constance Michaud, whom he would eventually marry. He graduated from the UW School of Pharmacy in 1962 after taking a year off from college to serve in the Army. Robert continued to serve in the reserves in Pasco for several years while starting his pharmacy career. In 1965, he married Constance, following her graduation from pharmacy school. The couple settled in Kennewick, Washington, and welcomed their only child, Christopher, in 1969. Robert's first pharmacist position was at Fischer's in Angus Village and during his long career he worked in all three Tri-Cities. After working in other people's stores for several years, he partnered with another local pharmacist to open his own store, the Medical Center Pharmacy, in Richland, WA. The store was located across the way from Richland's iconic Tastee Freez drive-in. Both Robert and his wife Constance worked at the store. The business thrived in equal parts due to Robert's empathy and ability to connect with customers, and his wife's shrewd business sense. Eventually, a second pharmacy was opened in a new building across from Kadlec Medical Center. During his career, Robert was active in mentoring future pharmacists, and served on the Washington State Board of Pharmacy in the early 1990s. When the pharmacy business began to change, Robert sold his practice to Rite-Aid, where he worked until he retired in 2006. After retirement, Robert became a fixture at the local McDonald's on Highway 395, gathering with other retirees to drink coffee and share stories in the mornings. The group was affectionately known as the "McGroup." Robert's father instilled in him a love of the outdoors. He spent many a day pheasant hunting and fishing across the state. His true passion was fishing, which he used to help connect with his pharmacy customers. Pictures of his fishing exploits were a fixture at his pharmacy. Customers came in to get their prescriptions filled and hear about the local fishing. Robert took scores of friends, customers and colleagues on angling expeditions on his days off. His most profound legacy will be the people he introduced to the sport he loved. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Constance. He is survived by his son, Christopher, a brother, Clark, nephews Mike and Brad, and several cousins. A service of remembrance will be held on May 13, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union Street in Kennewick. A brief reception will follow the service. In memory of Robert, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in his name.
