Phyllis Corrinne Lynn Elder was born December 1, 1918, in Plains, Sanders County, Montana to Charles Curtis Lynn and Katie Delmar Lake. She died January 10, 2014 in Richland, Washington. Phyllis was born shortly after the end of World War I, while an epidemic of influenza was devastating this country. One of the victims of the flu was her mother, Katie. When Phyllis was four months old, a beloved lady came into her life, Isabelle Rebecca Logue Huffman, who became stepmother to the Lynn children. Her family moved to Idaho, then to Washington. Phyllis married Harold Elder on September 3, 1937 in Kennewick. They spent a week picking hops in Mabton to pay for their honeymoon. Phyllis and Harold are the parents of two daughters, Fern Arlene and Karen Rae. Phyllis grew up knowing how to care for others. Her stepmother had health problems. She lived with Phyllis' family for many years. Phyllis helped to care for her father before he died, then for Harold's parents, her own brothers and sisters, and then the mother of a dear friend. When Harold's health failed, Phyllis cared for him. Then she cared for another friend for part of several years. Phyllis and Harold were partners, working at whatever was needed to support their family. They raised hogs for a few years during World War II. She was a presser for several dry cleaners to help pay for her daughters' education. She learned to decorate cakes and enjoyed creating beauty for many occasions. She was a Girl Scout leader and she taught church classes of many ages. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She and Harold were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1956. She did a great work in genealogical research for many years. She is survived by her daughter Karen Elder of Kennewick and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, daughter Fern Doyle, grandsons Harold Everett Doyle and Andrew Elder Doyle, her parents, three brothers and five sisters. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Olympia Chapel, 4445 S. Olympia, Kennewick, in the Relief Society Room with interment to follow at Desert Lawn Memorial Park.
