Obituary

Nellie J. Maher, 89, long time resident of the Tri Cities, passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2006. Nellie was born on September 23, 1916, in Clinton, Illinois, to Walter and Maude Young. Nellie married Otto Souder in 1942 and moved to North Richland in 1948, during the Hanford Construction days. In 1953, they moved to Kennewick and later owned and operated the Lane Barber Shop located in Angus Village until her retirement in 1979. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Richland and later joined the Church of Christ in Kennewick. Nellie had many hobbies throughout her life, but fishing and hunting were her passion. She spent many hours in the field hunting with her son and hours of patience at the riverside with rod and reel in hand teaching her grandchildren to cast. She also enjoyed playing golf and in her later years she enjoyed playing Bingo and baking treats for neighbors and friends. Nellie had a contagious laugh and a bountiful sense of humor that brought a smile to everyone's face. Nellie's love for her family was evident in every aspect of her life and she will be sorely missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, two sisters, and husbands, Otto Souder in 1979 and Gerald Maher in 1995. Nellie is survived by her son, Jerry Clark and his wife Sheri of Allyn, WA; Grandchildren, Becky and David, along with three great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Foundation, UW Hospital BB-361 RC-34, Seattle, WA. 98195. There will be a graveside service for Nellie on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, corner of 10th Ave. and Union Street in Kennewick.
