June 24, 1931 - December 21, 2021
Mona Irene Bennett passed away peacefully on December 21, 2021. Mona was born in Casey (Wallula), WA on June 24, 1931, to Arlyn and Nina Thompson. She was a lifelong resident of the Wallula and Burbank area, graduating salutatorian from Columbia High in 1950. In her youth, Mona worked as a waitress and telephone operator before marrying her high school sweetheart Kenneth Bennett on October 13, 1951. Mona spoke fondly of the time she and Ken spent at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, AK while Ken served in the U.S. Air Force before moving to Burbank, WA in 1954 where they made their home together and raised their two daughters, Kathy and Karen. Mona had a passion for gardening and loved flowers, devoting herself to her home garden and yard and also put her talents to good use while working at a garden center. Mona also enjoyed arts and crafts including woodworking, tole painting, sewing, and crocheting, making all of her grandchildren beautifully handcrafted afghan blankets. Mona was also a fantastic cook, making countless family meals and delicious treats for all to enjoy. Mona loved decorating, especially for the holidays, making the occasion special for her children and extended family. She even decorated her backyard for the enjoyment of the children playing on the adjacent Columbia Elementary School playground. She loved music and singing and prided herself on her ability to sing her great grandbabies to sleep in her rocking chair. Mona was loved by all, especially children. There was hardly a time at Mona and Ken’s house when you wouldn’t find children about. Nieces, nephews, and neighborhood children were always welcome and frequently accompanied Mona and Ken during their many camping and fishing excursions to the coast or the mountains. Her grandchildren have cherished memories of days home sick from school at Grandma’s watching Bob Ross and the Price is Right and spending comfortable, lamp-lit evenings watching Wheel of Fortune and the Golden Girls. She loved playing games with her grandchildren and putting together puzzles. In her later years, her great-grandchildren were able to build the same fond memories. Mona will be remembered as a generous, fun-loving, talented person always willing to help. She never met a stranger and will be greatly missed by her family and everyone whose lives she touched. Mona is survived by her daughters Kathy Nelson (Marv Schneider) and Karen (Mike) Howell; grandchildren Eric (Melissa) Nelson, Jennifer Pratt, Dr. Jerad (Sarah) Howell, Angie (Nic) Newsome, Haylea (Casey) Werlinger, and Melissa Nelson-Russell (Sean Peot); great-grandchildren Rylee, Tayler, Cameron, Kinsey, Valerie, Evan, Joshua, Axyl, Ava, Jadyn, Ivy, Autumn, Paisley, Casey, Bentley, Preston, and Kenly; sisters-in-law Charlotte (Marvin) Nyberg and Carol Murray; brothers-in-law Steven (Jean) Bennett and Robert Bennett; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mona is preceded in death by her husband, mother and father, sisters Bonnie Waters, Geraldine Wright, and Deloris Blackburn, and great-granddaughter Alivia Newsome. Mona’s family would like to thank the Burbank Fire Department for always being so kind and helpful when Mona needed assistance. Graveside services will be held on Friday, January 7, 2022, at 1pm at the Wallula Cemetery.
