In Loving Memory of Marianne Grace Bernard Grant, age 93, who passed away in Pasco, WA on October 1, 2007. Marianne was born in Okanogan, WA on September 14, 1914, the third child of Martha and Rolland Bernard. She grew up in the Okanogan and Methow Valleys. Her childhood experiences included attending a one room schoolhouse in Chopaka and escaping a family house fire with few possessions, including freshly baked bread. A treasured memory of Marianne?s was shaking the hand of Queen Marie of Romania at the Maryhill Museum in 1926. Marianne met George, her future husband, when she was 15 and he was 14. Although they never lived in the same town or went to the same school, their paths kept crossing and they married eight years later on May 29, 1938. Marianne attended schools in Wenatchee and Twisp, eventually graduating from Oroville High School. After marriage, George and Marianne settled in Coulee City, until the war took them to CA, IL, NE and MS to dad?s work at ordnance plants in the Army. After war?s end, they returned to the Northwest and settled in Ephrata, creating a home in a Quonset hut left over from the war. In 1948, they moved to Pasco where they live today. Along the way, Marianne raised six children, opened her home and donated her time and resources to people of all nationalities and ethnicities and supported her husband in running his business, George Grant Construction. Marianne was a quiet but determined woman who demonstrated her faith and love of all humankind through her actions. She volunteered at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Auxiliary for over 50 years, with the ?Hairbenders? at Beverly Nursing Home for over 20 years and active with St. Patrick?s School and Church. Marianne was very dedicated to her family. She was a Scout leader for her daughters and sons, attended endless sporting events, and happily drove on numerous camping trips and cross-country road trips. One memorable one was driving across country with 4 of her youngest children to attend the New York World?s Fair while George was on Army Reserve camp for two weeks. Her greatest joy was having all the family together for holidays and celebrations. Laced through all was her love of gardening and being outdoors. If we couldn?t find Marianne, we always knew to look ?outdoors?. She grew wonderful tomatoes and picked flower bouquets wherever she was. Along with her husband, George, she also enjoyed sports, especially Mariner?s Baseball and WSU Cougar Football. She was part of the ?9-Holers? at Tri-Cities Country Club for 30 years. Her golf career only ended at age 84 when she broke her hip. We will miss Marianne and her ?can do? spirit. There was nothing Marianne couldn?t or wouldn?t do. We love you mom and we thank you from deep in our hearts for all the great years we were blessed to have you. Marianne is survived by her devoted husband, George, her six children, Sharon, Ilene Don Hogaboam, Ron, Betty, Jim and Beverly Eddie Reed, five grandchildren; Shannon Chris Fowler, Eric Doneshvar, Marcus Reed, Julia Reed and Toby Woods and three great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and St. Patrick?s School.
