Margaret "Mary" Dickman, age 89, passed away on May 28, 2014 at The Tri-City Chaplaincy Hospice House in Kennewick. As a born again Christian, Mary was received into glory after a long and courageous battle with inflammatory breast cancer. Mary was born on a chilly morning in Englefield Green, England on September 14, 1924 to loving parents George and Muriel Sharpe. A few minutes after she was born, her mother was surprised to give birth to another child—her twin Colin! Mary was also sister to Donald, Philip, and Alan Sharpe. As was custom in those times, Mary went to work at 14 as a secretary. She lived through buzz bombs, blackouts and the food rationings of World War II. At 20, Mary met Kenneth Dickman, for the first time. He was a US Army serviceman stationed in London. They attended dances together and were even scolded once at the London Palladium for doing the jitterbug! Mary always insisted she went to the dances for the food. When Kenneth returned to the States, the two kept in touch by writing letters and after a few years decided to marry. Mary arrived in the blizzards of Wyoming in 1949 and was married to Kenneth on February 6th, 1949. In Wyoming, Mary and Ken farmed and operated a service station. By 1954, Kenneth and Mary moved to the Columbia Basin to homestead and farmed until 1980. In 1976, they purchased the Basin City Grocery store and ran it until 1998. Mary, always active in her community and constantly the secretary, served as charter member of the Basin Homemakers, Mesa United Protestant Church, Ringold Grange 936, Veterans of Foreign Wars Kennewick, and was treasurer to Basin City Park. She also enjoyed participating in Women's Bible Study Fellowship. Mary loved knitting, family, friends and parties! Her witty sense of humor and a song for every occasion will be greatly missed. Mary was preceded by her husband Kenneth (of 63 years) and is survived by her children Valarie (Richard) Yoder, Raymond (Bunny) Dickman, Stephanie Search, and Mary Christine (Randy) Mack , 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren. A viewing is planned for 5-8pm on Thursday, June 5 at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home on Union St. in Kennewick. Services are Friday, June 6, 2014 at 11am at South Hills Church, 3700 W. 27th Ave., Kennewick, WA. Donations may be made to Tri-City Chaplaincy Hospice House.
