Luke 'Duke' Erwin Doerr's Life came to a peaceful close on Thursday March 26, 2009. Born in 1920, Luke was raised in Britt, Iowa. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1938 and served with distinction during World War II on The U.S.S. Helena and other naval vessels as a gunnery mate. Luke was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945. He was a carpenter and moved to the TriCities in 1948 to work at Hanford. In the early 1950s, he worked in the construction of McNary dam. Eventually, he became a bookkeeper and office manager, and moved with his wife, Margaret, to Beaverton, Oregon. After retirement, he and Margaret moved to Eltopia. They recently celebrated 46 years of marriage. Survivors include Margaret, children Mark wife Cathy, of Spokane, Patricia John Burns of Pahrump, Nevada, Katherine John Von Dohlen of Sonoma, Sharon Art Hunter of Eltopia, and Janet Barry Pope of Denton Texas. Luke and Margaret have 21 grandchildren and their spouses, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mark, Kathy and Pat were the children of Luke's first marriage with Eleanor Mark of San Francisco. Two of Luke's brothers, Maurice and William, preceded him in death as did his first wife, Eleanor. His parents were Theodore and Anna Doerr of Iowa and later, San Francisco. All of Luke and Margaret's children, grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren are a big, happy brood who miss their Papa Duke's sense of humor and incisive social commentary.
