On Feb. 14, 2010, Leonard 'Dutch' VanDinter left this earth to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, with Marion, the love of his life and his wife of 40 years at his side. Dutch resided in the Tri-Cities since 1945, and after serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Marion, he finished his tour on the USS George Clymer. He was honorably discharged in 1952 after serving in the Korean War as an electrician's 3rd mate and a certified motion picture operator. Dutch went on to work for the Burlington Northern Railroad where he retired in 1991 after a long career as an Engineer. Dutch was a devoted father of 9 children, and along with being an outstanding provider for his family, he was also a man of great integrity and a perfectionist in everything he did. From tinkering in his garage to fixing things on his to do list, he always did the best he could do. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and always had advice and a helping hand to his many grandkids. He took great pride in helping his children through life's struggles and as a grandfather, his love for children was undeniable. His love for God was also undeniable and at the age of 68 he became a born again Christian. He attended Calvary Chapel of Tri-Cities. His gentle nature was an influence to his family and friends. His outstanding work ethic and moral standards were a shining example to his children and all who knew him and he never compromised his faith nor his values. He was an avid sports fan and loved his Mariners and Seahawks. Apart from being a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was the 'trunk' and an irreplaceable part of our family tree and his very presence will be truly missed. WE LOVE YOU and don't take any wooden nickels! He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, a sister, one grandson and one greatgranddaughter. He is survived by his wife and soul mate of 40 years, Marion; sons, Brian, Mike, Ron Sherry and Shawn Tami. Daughters, Janice Ken Sharon, Cary, Diane and Briana. Brothers Kenneth Pat, Jack Lawanna, Duane Becky and Gary Sue; 24 grandkids, 20 great-grandkids and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
