Laura Lee (Small) Bailie passed away on March 4, 2017 quietly and peacefully. She was born December 8, 1923 in Walla Walla, Washington to Ray Lewis Small and Mary Agnes Britton Small. She grew up on a wheat farm north of Waitsburg, Washington and she went to school in a one room country school house named Menokin, sometimes riding to school on a bareback horse. Everything was done on a horse, which she loved, even hoeing weeds in the summer fallow. Everything except milking the cow. She went to high school in Waitsburg her fall half of freshman year and spring half in Touchet, WA. Her parents moved to a wheat farm in Woodward Canyon, Lowden, Washington. She then school bussed to Wa Hi in Walla Walla where she graduated in 1941. Summer of 1941 she learned to cook for large harvest crew on a woodstove in a cook wagon with Marguerite and Francis Smith whose father George Smith was wheat farming in the Horse Heaven Hills. In the fall, she went to Walla Walla Business College and got a job with Army Engineers riding a bicycle to work. Later transferred to Berkley, California, Manhattan Army Engineers for two years on the Berkley Campus before returning to Walla Walla, Washington. In 1945 she met and married Maynard (Dick) Thompson Bailie and returned to Dryland Wheat farming in the Mesa and Basin City area. Back to woodstoves and dust storms. This union was blessed with two sons and two daughters. Thomas Lee Bailie born 1947 (wife Linda Pickett Bailie); Mary Margret Pink Reeve born 1949 (husband Michael Reeve); Susan Carol Bailie born 1950; and Maynard Terrill Bailie born 1952 (wife Jody Bailie). Grandchildren: Jill Howard, Tomalin, Zack, Tamsyn, & Megan Bailie, Michael & Jason Pink, Kary Pink Mathews, Everett & Eric Isaac, Tyson & Stefan Bailie, Alison Bailie McCartney, Brooke, Phillip and Felisa Arias. Twenty Great-Grandchildren: Brittanie, Jacob, Michelle, Madison, Oliver, Max, Shelby, Lane, Danika, Darbi, Delaney, Kyler, Amelia, Elyse, Leila, Daylen, Abriah, Calla, Coco, and Banks. Two Great-Great Grandchildren: Bridget and Elizabeth. Laura Lee was a charter member of the new Congregational Church in Eltopia in 1955 and taught Sunday school for some time. Maynard helped to build the church and the pulpit, alter, and choir loft. They are still in use today. Her life was filled with husband, children, farm work, Shetland ponies, Quarter horses, and Herford cattle. She always said her favorite colors were blue skies, green grass, and red & white Herford cattle. She was preceded in death by her husband Maynard (Dick) Bailie, her parents Ray and Agnes Small, brothers Ray Small Jr. and Theodore (Ted) Small and granddaughter Megan Bailie. Viewing will be held Friday, March 10th, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 11th, 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union Street, Kennewick. Graveside services will be Saturday, March 11th, 11:00 a.m., at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, adjacent to the funeral home.
