Memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion John Scherger lived in Pasco until the day of his death, December 29, 2006, at the age of 86. He was born in 1920, in Medicine Hat to George and Helen Scherger. John's family moved to Pasco in 1923 when his father began working for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He graduated from Pasco High School in 1939 and went on to play football for Gonzaga University. John entered the army in 1942 serving with distinction in the European Theater. In 1948, John married Amber Beatrice Sletten who was a school teacher in the Kennewick School District. Later John became a pipe fitter at Hanford and moved onto teaching welding and blueprint design at Columbia Basin College. Retiring in 1982, John was able to enjoy the next 24 years playing golf, fishing and spending time with his family. Amber preceded John in death in 1975. He is survived by his sister Delia Garrett of West Des Moines Iowa, his oldest son John, wife Cherie, granddaughter Rachel and grandson Trenton of Ridgefield, Washington, grandson Nathan of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and great grandson Riley of Kennewick, Washington, his middle daughter Betsy of Walla Walla, Washington and his youngest son Jay, wife Kristi and granddaughter Macyn of Touchet, Washington.
