Obituary

Joel Fredrick Williams, Sr., aged 89, of Kennewick, WA, departed this life for the next on August 19, 2017. Born on November 19, 1927 near Detroit, MI to Joel and Ruth Catherine (Hosfeldt) Williams, he served in the U.S. Army beginning in 1946 and was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sargent in 1947. He attended Andrews University under the GI Bill, graduating in Chemistry and Biology. Joel worked in the nuclear industry most of his career, moving to Kennewick in 1967, and retired in 1994 after 24 years with Westinghouse-Hanford. During his career, Joel supervised a group of engineers managing the acquisition and use of nuclear materials for work conducted by the Hanford Engineering Development Laboratory on such projects as the Fast Flux Test Facility. Joel was multi-talented, engaging in the performing arts as a young man, and in mechanics throughout his life. He was an avid fan of Mariners baseball and Gonzaga University basketball. He especially loved watching all his children's and grandchildren's baseball, basketball, and hockey games. He was preceded in death by his first wife Marie Catherine (McCusker) Williams with whom he had six children. He is survived by his much beloved second wife of 50 years, Anna (McCleary) Williams and eight children: Joel, Jr; Kendrick; Brian; Karen; Greg; Tod; Chris; and Paul; their spouses; twenty grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
