Judge (Ret.) Jack F. Olsen passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 12, 2013, after a brief stay at the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House in Kennewick, WA. Jack was preceded in death by his parents Truman and Mildred Olsen, his wife Kathy Olsen and step-daughter Robin Whitten. He is survived by his sister Nan Rabbe of Gig Harbor, WA, his children Debra (David) Paine of Tucson, AZ, Kurt (Dena) Olsen of Pilot Rock, OR, Karen Jacobs-Lona and Eric Olsen of Portland, OR, step-children Gary (Cheryl) Putnam of Tucson, AZ, Leslie (Coleman) Devine of Jefferson, OR, Sheree (Don) Norquist of Chelmsford, MA, and Larry (Karen) Whitten of Pasco, WA. Jack F. Olsen was born in Portland, OR, on April 22, 1931. He graduated from Grant High School (Portland) in 1949 and served honorably in the U.S. Air Force. He was a 12 year member of the Portland Police Dept., where he withstood adversity with great personal integrity and courage. Jack was a graduate of Lewis and Clark College and Northwestern College of Law. He was the Deputy District Attorney for Clackamas County and spent time in private practice in Oregon City, OR, focusing on criminal defense. Jack lived for many years in Pendleton, OR. There he served as Umatilla County District Attorney and finally as Umatilla County Circuit Court Judge. After retirement, Jack moved to the Tri-Cities and was an active and proud member of the Columbia Center Rotary for many years. He traveled extensively in his involvement with Rotary, including travel to India in 2001 to participate in a vaccination campaign. Recently, Jack enjoyed attending Columbia Community Church in Richland. He served several years on the Board of Directors for the Support, Advocacy and Resource Center and volunteered at the Edith Bishel Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Jack will be remembered for his keen mental prowess and fiercely independent manner. He was a man of justice and honor. He loved to read, write and learn. To his very last days, Jack had an active sense of humor and sharp intellectual wit. No services will be held at Jack's request.
