As was always so in the 61 years our parents were married, Dad went ahead and found a place for Mom. This time, she left us behind, joining Dad until we can all be together again. Irene Le Clair met a handsome US Coast guardsman, Ronald Smith, during her senior year at Lewiston High School in Lewiston, Maine. They were married at Saints Peter and Paul Church on June 27 1953, and moved to Kansas City where Ron worked for the Burlington Railroad. Irene was born June 14, 1934, to Lucien and Ida Le Clair, and 2 years later her brother Bob was born. An older half-sister, Armande, was also part of Irene's family. The family was French Canadian and Grandma and Grandpa Le Clair spoke French in the household. Moving away from her family was not easy but Ron's family in Kansas City embraced Irene. Son David was born and daughter Donna came 5 years later, completing the Smith family. Irene ran the household as Ron was frequently away due to the demands of his railroad career. She made friends easily and created homes for her family in Kansas City, Hannibal MO, Lincoln NE, La Grange Park IL, finally moving to Kennewick in 1972. They also lived in Issaquah, before retiring back in Kennewick. Irene enjoyed playing bridge. She played in several groups; along with couples groups. She played golf, joining Dad at Mouse and Spouse tournaments. Irene loved to play cards and games with family. She usually won too. She also loved to sing but her greatest pleasure was entertaining family with Sunday dinners and Holiday celebrations. She loved her grandchildren, Ricky, Charly, Evan and shared a special bond with grandson Hazen. Irene suffered from dementia in her last years but met her challenges with grace and dignity. We are all grateful for the time we had with Mom. Waiting for Irene, joyfully welcoming her on April 9, were her mother and father, brother Robert Le Clair, sister Armande, and her beloved husband Ron. Ron passed away March 24, 2014. Irene left behind son David Smith and wife Joy; their sons Richard Herrmann (Jessica) and Charles Smith (Heather). Daughter Donna Kunk and husband Joe; their sons Hazen Palmer (Angie) and Evan Kunk. In recent years, Irene had so much fun enjoying great-grandchildren; Ashlynn Palmer, Michael & Alex Howe and Lillian Smith. Our parents left for us a legacy of caring. They wanted us all to be happy and safe. Dad and Mom's marriage was a beautiful example of everlasting love. We are finding love notes all around their home. In their memory, we ask that you embrace the people you love and cherish friendships. Dedicate your next bridge game to Mom and golf game to Dad. Please join our family as we say a temporary goodbye to our mom. Rosary at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Kennewick, 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 21; Funeral Mass at Parish of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 22.
