Ida Iona Jahnel Schauss was born on November 23, 1918 in Sioux County, North Dakota to Emil and Emma Jahnel. Growing up on the farm, her job was caring for fowl, chickens, geese, turkeys. She attended a one-room school through eighth grade and then moved to the big city. She worked her way through high school doing housework and childcare for her room and board. Education was always very important in her life. She moved to Pasco during World War II with her forever husband and love of her life, Benjamin Schauss. He served at the Naval base in Pasco and they remained residents of the Tri Cities for the past 78 years. They actively served in their church and community. Ida stayed at home raising children until all were in school and then worked for JA Jones Construction as an accounting clerk. Her goal in working was to put their five children through college. She had her children learn a musical instrument and especially learn to swim, as she was always a bit afraid of the water. Her daughters remember production lines to can and freeze vegetables and fruit during the summer. There was great food to eat for the family. With five children and a farming background, everything was done on a large scale. She often went without nice things for herself so she could provide for their family. Her children also remember many home remedies for earaches, toothaches, and colds. And there were many summer weekend camping trips in the travel trailer to the ocean and lakes. Family was definitely a priority in her life. She enjoyed gardening, oil painting, traveling, camping, reading poetry, walking, bird watching, family gatherings, ballroom dancing, boating, and attending church. Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin, her parents, Emma and Emil Jahnel, and her siblings, Mabel, Pearl, Edith, Joseph, Lawrence, Lester, Shirley, and Robert. Late on Valentine's Day at the age of 99, one of the most beautiful hearts in the universe stopped beating. She is survived by her children, Suzanne Covlin (Vern) of Pendleton OR, Janice Fraley (David) of Kennewick, Patricia Heard (Kevin) of Richmond CA, Dennis Schauss (Kim) of Garibaldi OR, and E. Alan Schauss (LaVonne) of Naches WA. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3 at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union. There will be a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tri-Cities Union Gospel Mission.
