Harold Leyton Newman, born November 9th, 1927 in Atherton, California, passed away in Emmett, Idaho on September 12th, 2013 at the age of 85. Harold was the youngest of four children born to Mae and Arthur Newman. He had two sisters and a brother. He is preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings and first wife. He moved to Cottonwood, California as a young man, met and married Darlene Hafelfinger in 1945 at the ripe old age of 17. They were proud parents of two biological children Karen and Robert. They also became mom and dad to many foster children, sometimes having as many as nine children in the home at one time. Harold entered the Air Force and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas and was trained as a medic. He finished his term with the Air Force and went into truck driving with his brother-in-law. In 1951 he moved back to Cottonwood and did various jobs including working on a ranch and in a sawmill. During this time he pursued his hobbies and interests. Among these were building a house, a boat, and a race car. In 1958 the family moved to Anderson, California and he worked in janitorial supplies, milk man (Harold did not like, as he had to collect money during the day when women were watching their soap operas) and Sales. In 1962 they moved to Emmett, Idaho and started a career in Orchard Management and packing shed management. In 1967 the family moved to Orofino, Idaho and began a new career in construction work. Working with concrete he helped build Dworshak Dam and the Spokane Opera House. In 1977 they moved to Lewiston, Idaho and he became the Union Representative for the Laborers Local 238. This eventually brought him to Pasco, Washington where he worked with the laborers training program. In 1981, after a 5-year battle with cancer, Darlene passed away. In January 1982 he found another love of his life, Linda Elliott, and they were married. Also added to the family were children Kristi Kay Overlie and Kenny Eugene Elliott. In 1992 they were married for time and all eternity in the Seattle LDS Temple. In 1985 Harold became the business manager of the Laborers Union of North America Local 348. He took pride in serving all of the members. It was a depressed time but he was able to get them an increase of pay at the Hanford area which hadn't been done in years. He was a member of the union for 46 years. Harold was highly devoted and involved with politics. He always wanted to do the best for his fellow citizens. Many times this raised an eyebrow at the Newman home. He loved boating and being on the water. He also loved camping. Harold was a devoted long time member of the LDS Church. Harold and Linda were able to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as employment specialists in 1996 for 18 months. Harold is the proud father of four children, five grandkids, 12 great-grandkids, and four great-great-grandkids. We want to thank Treasure Valley Hospice for their support and help.
