Obituary

Fredrick Shelby Stong passed away on June 8th, 2015 at the age of 86. Fred was born to Fred E. Stong and Grace M. (Shelby) Stong in Globe, Arizona on July 9, 1928. Fred grew up in Globe and graduated from Globe High School. After spending two years in the Navy as an Electronics Technician, Fred returned to Arizona and attended the University of Arizona earning a BS degree in Chemistry. While living in Tucson, Fred met and married Marion Krocker, a widow with two children, Rosemary (Pasco, WA) and Robert (Vancouver, WA.) Fred and Marion had five additional children; Fred, Jr. (Tularosa, NM), William (Spokane, WA), Joanne (Rockaway Beach, OR), Michael (Kennewick, WA), and Kathy (Richland, WA). Fred worked for General Electric for several years in Albuquerque, NM prior to being transferred to the Hanford Operations, and moving to Kennewick, Washington in 1960. He was assigned to work as an engineer in the 200 area for General Electric Hanford Company and subsequent contractors. He designed radiation monitoring equipment for process control and personnel safety. He retired from Westinghouse Hanford Company in 1989. When not working, Fred devoted much of his free time to boating with the family and building and flying radio controlled model airplanes. He was always interested in aeronautics and was a member of the Globe High School flying club. Fred was a founding member of the Tri-Cities Radio Control Modelers Club. In 1986, Fred Married Joyce L. Lee and is survived by her, their joint families, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. He'll be deeply missed by them all. We will be forever grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff of Columbia Basin Hematology and Oncology for their loving care, patience and concern during Fred's long illness. Hospice of the Chaplaincy has been a steady, caring and giving part of these last days. The nurses of Professional Case Management were a loving and caring source of support during Fred's last weeks. Our love and thanks to all of you. Services will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, June 11th at Hillspring Church, formally the Cathedral of Joy. Private committal services will be held prior to the church service.
