Elizabeth Feemster Gladden, age 101, passed away at her home in Pasco in the company of her family, on Saturday, June 16th, 2018. Elizabeth was born August 4, 1916 to Howard Calvin and Emma Groelz Feemster in York, Nebraska. She was raised there with her three siblings: older brother Calvin, sister Wilhelmina, and younger brother William. After graduating early from high school, she attended York College majoring in Mathematics and English. At age 22, she obtained her first teaching job in Primrose, Nebraska where she taught both Math and English. She met her future husband, James Wade Gladden, at a Classics Department tea when visiting her sister at the University of Chicago in the summer of 1941. They married in 1943 and both taught at Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming. After the war, they moved to Pasco, Washington where both obtained teaching positions. Together they raised four children. Elizabeth was devoted to her family and treasured time with them. She was also an avid world traveler, whose itineraries included the United Kingdom, much of Europe, and the Holy Land. She enjoyed gardening, decorating her home for every holiday, baking, and hosting tea parties for her numerous friends. Elizabeth was an enthusiastic walker; regularly taking four mile walks around Pasco well into her eighth decade. Perhaps most importantly, Elizabeth enjoyed the company of others, making friendships that spanned generations. She taught eighth grade English to several generations of students at both McLoughlin Junior High and Stevens Junior High, retiring in 1982. Elizabeth was a long-time member of Shalom United Church of Christ, and a member of the American Association of University Women, Alpha Delta Kappa, and Washington State Retired Teachers. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, siblings, and daughter Ruth. She is survived by her daughters Sally and Kathy, son Jim, daughter-in-law Valerie, grandchildren Rula and Marcus, sister-in law Corinne Feemster, as well as several nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 pm on July 28th at Shalom United Church of Christ in Richland, Washington. Memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund.
