At the age of 97, Edna went back home to be with the Lord on November 25th, 2014 when she passed peacefully in her sleep after a 5 year battle with Alzheimer's. Born to James E. and Minnie B. Jacobs, on June 21, 1917 in Marmet, West Virginia, she grew up in the hills of "The Mountain State". She graduated from East Bank High School and soon met and married her husband, John R. Smith Jr. (Catfish), and started their life together. During World War II, she moved to Colorado Springs (while John did his basic training) and later moved to Washington D.C. After the war, they returned to West Virginia to resume their lives. In 1948, Edna came to the Tri-Cities to visit her sister Virginia Clatworthy and fell in love with the area. She wrote her husband and told him to come out and get her. He arrived a short time later and also decided to stay. Edna went to work at the Hanford site in 1949 as a Chemical Technologist until she retired in 1986. John and Edna lived in Kennewick where John worked as a Carpenter until his death in 1977. Known for her wit and stick-to-it attitude, she was well liked by her co-workers. She seemed to have a "special" saying to cover every situation. Edna was well liked by everyone and always had many stories about "Growing up as a Hillbilly" or her life here in the Tri-Cities. She was plain spoken and was never one to mince words (though she did love her hillbilly sayings). She had a very generous and kind heart. She was the fourth child in a family of seven and had numerous nieces and nephews (who called her "Aunt Bea"). Edna (her grandchildren called her "Grandma Cat") and John had 2 children, John R. Smith III and Melita C. Cloninger (Smith), 9 grandchildren, and (at last count) 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Minnie, her husband John R. Smith Jr., her daughter Melita C. Cloninger (Smith) and all but one of her siblings. A very special thanks to Cindy, her husband Chris, and the caregivers at "A Part of Our Family" an Adult Family Home in Kennewick where she lived for the last 4 years of her life and where everybody called her "Hillbilly". Another big thank you to Hospice for their help these last few months. A viewing for family and friends will be held on Monday, December 1st, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and services will be on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014, 11:00 a.m., at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union in Kennewick, Washington. There will be no graveside services.
