Following a prolonged illness, Dorothy Jane Simpson passed away on December 23, 2010, at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard Cannedy, her husband Dean Simpson, her beloved son Michael Cannedy, brother Woodrow Beckley, brother Jim Beckley, sister Darlene Caldwell, and sister Babe Phillips. She is survived by her granddaughter Cassandra Davenport and husband Greg, niece Cheryl Whittlesey and husband Craig, niece Patti Caldwell and husband Jay, nephew James Caldwell and wife Marlo, nephew Butch Phillips and wife Deanna, nephew Jimmie Beckley, stepson Steve Simpson, and stepdaughter Margaret Simpson. Dorothy was born in Coleridge, Nebraska. As a young woman she lived in Priest River, Idaho; Dayton, Walla Walla, and Richland; she then made her home in Kennewick, where she resided most of her adult life. She was employed in a variety of jobs, beginning with the army PX and eventually with the Richland VFW. Following Dean's retirement from UNC Nuclear Industries, they traveled extensively and enjoyed a retirement home in Mesa, Arizona. Dorothy was a member of the Kennewick First United Methodist Church for many years. Dorothy was known for her sense of adventure and a no-nonsense attitude that was coupled with her forgiving spirit. She and Dean were always ready to have a barbecue or other form of celebration where all of the family members could gather and tell stories about old times. She had a keen sense of humor. Dorothy had many friends of whom she spoke lovingly. Like many others of her era, there were times when things were tough for her, but she looked back on them as simply a part of life that she and others were tempered by and endured because it was a necessary step in moving on to better times and places. Her belief was that one must "trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight." A graveside service will be held at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Kennewick on Monday, January 3rd, at 11 o' clock.
