Donald Ray Moate, age 64, a devoted husband, father, friend, 'Papa,' and Bethlehem Lutheran School supporter left us to join his Lord and Savior on May 21, 2009. He was met with open arms by his loving daughter, Kim Beckstrom. Don was born on May 13, 1945, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and adopted on August 8, 1946, by George and Hazel Moate. He had one brother and four sisters. He attended Yakima public schools. He was enlisted with the U.S. Coast Guard, stationed at Clover Island. He worked as a meat cutter in area grocery stores and custom meat markets. He was always there for anyone who needed him. He mentored and loved many children of the Tri-Cities. He was a big supporter of Bethlehem Lutheran School, Kennewick High School boys and girls athletics, and Tri-City Americans hockey. Don was a girls basketball coach at Bethlehem for 30 years. He served on various boards and committees of both Bethlehem Lutheran School and Church. He had a wonderful sense of humor and will be missed by many. You knew how much he loved you by how much he teased you and if you receiveda visit from him as SantaClaus. He is survived by his wife Mary; daughters, Denise Rick Johnson and Christine Brandt Young; and his sister, Dorothy Tallman. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Cody Beckstrom, Chris, Aeyre, Todd, and Allyson Johnson, Carson and Casey Young and special friend Shirley Jensen. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly Beckstrom. There will be a memorial celebration of Don's life at Bethlehem Lutheran School/Church, 1409 S. Garfield, Kennewick, on Monday, May 25, 2009, at1:30 p.m. Casual dress is appreciated. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Bethlehem Lutheran School Endowment Scholarship Fund BLSEF.
