DeLoy Montgomery completed life here on earth at home with family on February 12, 2013. He was born to Joseph and Verna Montgomery in West Point, Utah on February 16, 1930. Dee grew up with brothers, Dale and Lloyd, and sister Norene. He loved to play baseball and excelled earning many awards. He served in the army as a medic for two years during the Korean War. He had a great bass voice and loved to sing, especially to his children. During furlough from the Army he met his future bride Barbara Hyer, while on separate blind dates. They were married in November 1953 in the Logan, Utah Temple of the LDS Church. Dee worked for Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield, Utah and attended Weber State College studying business. Under the Homestead Act, Dee and Barb had the opportunity to come to Kennewick, Washington on a GI Land Grant of 160 acres located where Desert Hills Middle School now stands. In 1957 they brought their two young daughters and lived in a primitive Quonset hut. Clearing the land of sagebrush and rocks was difficult, challenging work especially while raising a family that grew to include 6 children. Due to their diligent efforts and perseverance they were the only original homesteaders who completed the grant agreement and claimed their land in Kennewick. In 1970 Dee had a tragic farming accident that nearly took his life. He had many challenges with his health as a result. His wife, who worked at Kennewick General Hospital, and children took care of the farm for many months along with help from neighbors and church members during his recovery. In later years Dee and Barb enjoyed golfing and traveled many places with friends to golf. He was preceded in death by his brother Dale, sister Norene, son Kelly and grandchildren Nick Montgomery and Brittany Smittee. He will be missed by his wife Barbara, brother Lloyd (Darlene) of Rupert, Idaho, daughters Robyn Million, Jody Montgomery, Ginger (Spencer) Houck, Cristi (Mike) Smithee and son Spencer (Robin) Montgomery, 25 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
