Clement Joseph Knoll of Kennewick, WA passed away on January 27, 2014 at age 91 in Richland, WA. Clem was born on August 23, 1922 in Mandan, North Dakota to Clementine and Nicholas Knoll. Clem was raised by his mother; his father passed away when he was a young teen. He had 2 older brothers Tony and Ferd who preceded him in death. Clem was a standout high school football player, an all-state center and senior captain of the Mandan, ND football team. Clem also had the lead in the Mandan High School musical, HMS Pinafore, in his senior year. Clem had a beautiful voice and he enjoyed singing his entire life. As a lot of young men did he enlisted in the US Army during WWII. He was deployed to New Guinea and Northern Philippines where he was stationed at a communications outpost near the combat front until the end of the war. Clem took advantage of the GI Bill, enrolled at the University of North Dakota and received a Civil Engineering degree. While in college he met his future wife Glenna Burke. Clem and Glenna were married in 1947 and settled in Bottineau, ND and started a family shortly thereafter. Three boys Tom, Bob and Richard and their only daughter Sue were born in North Dakota. The family also lived in Riverdale, ND where Clem was employed by the US Corps of Engineers, working on the Missouri River Garrison Dam Project. In 1955, the Knoll family moved to the San Francisco Bay area where the 4th boy Don was born. Clem worked as a facilities engineer for the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) at the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory. In 1960, Clem got a new job and moved the family to the suburbs of Washington DC and settled in Damascus, MD where their fifth boy, Andy, was born. Clem continued his career with the AEC where he worked as a civil engineer at the AEC headquarters in Germantown, MD. In 1970, Clem, Glenna and part of the family moved across the country again, this time to Kennewick, W A. Still with the AEC, Clem went to work on a new breeder reactor called the Fast Flux Test Facility which was under construction at Hanford. Clem worked several more years for the Federal government, retired and then took a job with Battelle Northwest. He finished out his civil engineering career and retired for good in the early 1980's. Clem was a good husband, provider, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was active in the Catholic Church and sang in the choir. He was active in the community and in his family's lives, attending ball games, school and church functions, parades and carnival and going on long summer vacations. Clem really liked having new vehicles and he enjoyed buying and trading up for new trucks, cars, trailers, 5th wheels and campers. Clem liked watching sports and was an avid Seattle Mariners and Seahawks fan. He enjoyed television, reading and listening to music. Clem also enjoyed wood working and making things like trivets and planter boxes. After multiple hip surgeries he made a lot of stocking hats and he did beautiful cross stitch projects. During their golden years Clem and Glenna took many road trips in their R V. They were snowbirds in Arizona every winter for years. Clem and Glenna also enjoyed shorter trips to destinations in the Pacific Northwest. Clem enjoyed having his dogs around including Freckles, OJ and Rusty. Clem was preceded in death by his beloved wife Glenna in 2008. They were married for 61 years. Clem later lived at the Charbonneau Senior Community, he enjoyed living there and had many friends and acquaintances. Many thanks to the staff at Charbonneau, caregiver Kelly and her staff and Nurse Carie Squires and her staff at the Squires adult family home in Kennewick. Clem had the love, gratitude and support of his entire family and in particular his only daughter Sue who lived nearby and lovingly attended to him until his death. Clem is survived by a large family including his children and spouses, grandchildren and spouses and several great-grandchildren. His children include Tom (Judy) Winchester, VA; Robert (Ella) Nags Head, NC; Susan (Chuck) Anderson Kennewick, WA, Richard (April) Lakeport, CA; Donald (Jeri) Yakima, WA; Andrew (Sherri) West Richland, WA, Grandchildren Troy (Angie) Knoll, Adam (Danielle) Knoll, Mikala Knoll, Kellan Knoll, Melissa (Scott) Yenko, Ann (Andy) Jenness, Kelli (Andrew) Aitchison, Bobbie (Brad) Knoll Fulcher, Breanne Stevenson, Thomas (Ezzie) Knoll, David Knoll and numerous great-grandchildren. Clem will be remembered at a memorial service on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at 1100 a.m., at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S Union St., Kennewick, WA. There will be a reception at Mueller's immediately following the service.
